Ascoli Satriano, Italia and Family Ties

Today the group ventured to Ascoli Satriano, where the Di Lauro family is from. Michael Di Lauro is the man filming the documentary of the Shepherds of Italy. He is also the director of another documentary featuring Italian Americans from the Pennsylvania-Ohio area called Prisoners Among Us.

This beautiful hilltop town is home to the Di Lauro and Angulano Families. The group spent the day with family trying to make up for the distance and time spent apart. For some it was the first time to meet their relatives. Even though the dialect and language was a barrier, the conversation was rapid and engaging. Somehow when you are with family, there is always a way to communicate so you understand each other.

Some touching moments came when the matriarch of the Di Lauro family presented Michael Di Lauro a photograph of his Great Grandfather who was the postman of the town. After many more photographs and conversation the ventured to the families Maseria, or outdoor farm style eating area. They dined under the arbor, with fresh cheeses, breads, fried sausage with sage alongside roasted pork and potatoes. Homemade wine to ease the conversation and enjoy the night of connections.

One connection occurred between the young men, one American and the other Italian. They share a love of drumming and want to both learn the others language. This is a common occurrence, as the youth have a wonderful spirit to share and engage over shared interests. What a beautiful way to learn about each others family history, by making current connections!

Late in the evening, the group arrived in Orsara, Italy. This is the town resposible for La Campagna. It was the scenery that captured Carmella's desire to name a restaurant for this countryside.

Here the group will stay at Peppe Zullo, a full service hotel, restaurant and cooking school. The goal for Peppe Zullo is to produce the freshest dishes relying on local ingredients, most of which are cultivated on site.

Tomorrow, Carmella and Michael will walk the streets of Orsara, the same streets their grandparents played on, walked on and called home. Again, it is a home coming for Michael, as this is his childhood coming to life. He will finally be able to put the pieces of his life together. Anyone who has gone to see the origins of their heritage can attest to the powerful draw this experience has on the heart and soul. It fills the spirit with light and understanding.
