How does food nurture you? There seems to be a label on food as comfort, fast, gourmet, whole, processed, slow etc. There are many words to describe the food we eat. However, do we really pay attention to what those labels say about us?
Growing up Italo American, food was a part of our families fabric. Every meal was planned, prepared and portioned out to give us a full belly, tell a simple story with the meal and to bring the family together at certain parts of the day. This was were we met, this was were we grew as a family.
Helping your body grow, develop and sustain life is one objective to the food we eat. Lingering at the dinner table, helps us connect emotionally to those seated. This also nurtures our spiritual needs.
Think about your eating habits and find the nurturing aspect. How does the food you eat, nurture your body, mind and spirit? How does the quality and quantity of ingredients aid to your well being? What improvements do you need to make in order to find a nurturing quality about your eating habits?
When we grew our own food, talked to the butcher, caught our own fish, we were connected, we were part of the whole. This year, take the time to understand what you eat, how you eat and then make small changes to find the nurturing quality of true nourishment.
We are 2nd generation Italo Americans from the Puglia Region. Our story is like many Italo Americans brought together via tradition, laughter, family and food. Since we could walk, we were in our grandparents' gardens reaching for the prized "seed" tomato. The "tasty tomato" is our life force; metaphor for love, food, tradition, memories, comfort, the market, summer canning, harvest, celebration, and much more. Share our family traditions as we build upon the legacy of our Italian Ancestry.
Food Is...
Family, Tradition, Memories, Flavors, Gatherings, Laughter, Life, Vitality, Comfort...Love.
