Italians all over the world celebrate Christmas Eve with much anticipation for the coming of Christ, their light of the world. With many winter traditions, the coming of light and the miracle of light is highly anticipated with such wonder and preparation. As Christ is the symbol of light for Catholics the world around, the Italians make certain to prepare the night before with a meal only of fish. There is no meat, as meat signifies a sacrifice and as of yet the Christ has not been born.
The number of fish dishes varies form region to region; small hill town to small hill town, but 7 is a number most are familiar with. There are 7 Sacraments, 7 virtues, 7 Chakras and 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is fitting that we celebrate the coming of light with the number 7, as it is a highly revered number.
1. Valour: Pursuit of Courage and Knowledge
2. Generosity: Pursuit of Giving
3. Liberality: Pursuit of Will
4. Diligence: Pursuit of Ethics
5. Patience: Pursuit of Peace
6. Kindness: Pursuit of Charity
7. Humility: Pursuit of Modesty
Whatever your Christmas Tradition, we at La Campagna wish you and your family the very best! May the coming of the Light fill your homes, hearts and souls with promise for the following year. Afterall, it is in Jesus Christ that we find our hope for eternal life. Follow his light and know all will be well!
We are 2nd generation Italo Americans from the Puglia Region. Our story is like many Italo Americans brought together via tradition, laughter, family and food. Since we could walk, we were in our grandparents' gardens reaching for the prized "seed" tomato. The "tasty tomato" is our life force; metaphor for love, food, tradition, memories, comfort, the market, summer canning, harvest, celebration, and much more. Share our family traditions as we build upon the legacy of our Italian Ancestry.
Food Is...
Family, Tradition, Memories, Flavors, Gatherings, Laughter, Life, Vitality, Comfort...Love.
