This morning, while watching the Today Show and a piece by Paula Dean, two different perspectives hitting on the same theme came through. The idea of food taking center stage to a culture, a family and love.
In each piece, the connection of how food brings together family was very strong. Our family food, is a memory in the making. A meal made with love nourishes the spirit, the body and mind for years to come. It is this idea that captured my attention as I agreed whole heartily.
Our traditions are built around food customs. The customs gather the family, friends and newcomers to the table. The table sustains the conversations, the savoring of dishes and the laughter. The moments are the memories we take away with us when we leave and look back.
And if we are very attune, when we eat the same dish another day, another celebration, another time; we are brought back through our senses: site, smell, taste, touch and listening to the memories of yesteryear! This is food's poetry, this is our heritage.
We are 2nd generation Italo Americans from the Puglia Region. Our story is like many Italo Americans brought together via tradition, laughter, family and food. Since we could walk, we were in our grandparents' gardens reaching for the prized "seed" tomato. The "tasty tomato" is our life force; metaphor for love, food, tradition, memories, comfort, the market, summer canning, harvest, celebration, and much more. Share our family traditions as we build upon the legacy of our Italian Ancestry.
Food Is...
Family, Tradition, Memories, Flavors, Gatherings, Laughter, Life, Vitality, Comfort...Love.
